This is my truck. I bought it in 2003. Someone saw it for sale in a small town in Montana and posted on the binder bulletin. I shipped it to NC (where I was living at the time). It has a few issues, but is a rust free truck! I drove it a little bit early on, but it's been sitting a lot lately. I need to rewire it and do some brake work. I have accumulated a lot of the brake parts but need to find some time to do the work. As most of you know, resources are tight when trying to raise a family. I'll get to it someday.

I searched yahoo images “vintage international truck”.
This picture was at one time on flickriver, but is no longer there. I found a pic of a KR11 by Randy Knauf aka “raddad!” and emailed him to see if this was his image. The KR11 image was from a real image of a real truck with a photoshop effect called Topaz Adjust and looks similar to the effect on the photo below. I never got a response.
On the yahoo summary image, the tag stated “international one and a half ton tow truck in revelstoke bc, this tow truck . . .”

I have just aquired this 1953 original factory built 4x4 and I would like to restore it back to it's original condition. Is there anyone else out there that has one of these and whould anyone know how many of them were built in 1953? Thanks - Roy

Hey Russ, I do not have too much more specs on it, but I have a few pics I could share.... The truck looks like it has the twin lever Rockwell transfercase and the Dana/Spicer front end. The rear end looks to be the type that goes into a 3/4 ton or 1 ton. I think IH installed heavy duty axles on their 1/2 ton 4x4 trucks along with the six lug wheels. The dash still has the original 4- wheel drive shift instruction sticker on it. The doors open and shut like the truck was new (no rust). I do need to replace the front grille, hood, and windshield. The bed has seen it's better days, but that is pretty typical for these old trucks. -Roy

Roy, you have L series front sheetmetal, 1949-52 mfg (could have been titled in 1953 while mfg in 1952). Check the data plate...My sources claim the first non-military production 4x4 appeared in 1954 as the R140. You could have a special order or converted L however. Never before seen a 4x4 L series, so you probably have L grill/header sheetmetal grafted onto a R series truck...not uncommon as it bolts right up. Very important at this juncture to get that line ticket as it will tell you everything you will need to be sure. Only problem will be if the data plate/title serial # came from another truck as the sheetmetal seems to have.
The interesting thing about this truck is that the shifting instructions on the dash seems to be from the factory. The floor panel where the levers for the transfercase come through the floor seem factory also. The cab has the twin back windows. You can see the original red paint all around the truck to include the front grill area. At one time the truck was painted an olive drab (you can really see it on the dash) for some unknown reason. Did the R series trucks have the twin back windows? What year did the R series trucks go to a single lever transfercase shifter? This truck is a mystery! Looking forward to getting that line ticket for sure, - Roy
<{POST_SNAPBACK}>
If this truck is a R series, then it has to be a 1954 because of the two small rear windows. In 1955 the rear window was a single. So I think I narrowed it down to either a 1953 0r 1954 4x4, time will tell, thanks for all of your good info. If it is a 54, then I better start looking for a front clip and hood..... - Roy

You have come to the right place. Do a search here on the site and you'll be suprised what info and questions you can get answered. Taylor your questions as specifically as possible and the really smart guys here will bust a gut to answer em. Nice purchase on the R-140, there has been some recent discussion of them on the site. Welcome to the addiction and keep those binders running.
P.S. POST PICTURES SOON!
Sorry, I cant answer whether 140's had PU beds but someone with a Gray book or a manual from binderbooks.com may answer soon.

Yes the R-140 was available with a 9' pickup body. The body was mounted on the 130" wheelbase chassis.
The dimensions of the body were Load space length - 110", Width was 54 1/2", Width between wheelhousings was 48 1/2". Height was 19". Tailgate height was 17 3/4". Floor space in square feet was 40.4. Water capacity in cubic feet was 60.8.
This information is out of the Sales Engineering Bulletin # 130, March 1954. R-140 and R-160 4 by 4 Models.

DNR140Hello,
Were R140's available with pickup truck beds?
My 1960 B140 came from the factory with an 8.5' stepside pickup bed. Most 140's did not come with a pickup bed.

DNR,
SteveO is right on with his info. The 9 foot bed was also used on the 130 series trucks, but they are rare. I have a pic of a 140 with the 9 foot bed. Send me your email address and I'll send it to you. You should also go buy the "gray book" by Crismon. It has a wealth of info on these and all IH's. I have a lot of info on the 140 4x4 & 160 4x4 trucks as well as contacts with several owners. Drop me a line and I'll shoot you some info.
I have an unofficial registry going on these trucks and would like to add yours to the list. Where are you located? What's the history of the truck? What are your plans for it? What options does it have? Was the line set ticket still in place on top of the glove box?
Finally, please post some pics on this site. We all really enjoy seeing these trucks and sharing info.
Take care,

Chris,
Good to hear from you. I know you must be excited. I remember when I was waiting on my truck to be delivered. Mine came from Montana and I lived in NC at the time (now in Atlanta). In case you haven't seen it, here's a link to pics of my truck:
http://www.oldihc.org/photopost/showphoto.php?photo=1558
Click on the "see this users gallery" link to see more pictures. Mine was originally a brush fire truck somewhere in Montana with a pump driven off the crank and a 500 gallon tank on the back. That's about all I know of the history of my truck.
Here's a link that discusses production quantities on these trucks that I thought you might be interested in:
http://www.binderbulletin.org/forums/showthread.php?t=46489
There's probably several other discussions on the oldihc.org, binderbulletin.org and justih.org websites about these trucks, but I can't put my fingers on them at the moment. I have a lot of additional info I'll share with you about these trucks when I have time also.
I can't wait to hear more about your truck and see some pics. Let me know when it arrives and if you have any questions. I'm glad to help in any way I can if it will help keep another of these trucks on the road.
Gotta run for now to see the rest of the superbowl. Take care and we'll talk again soon.

Chris,
Sorry I forgot to attach a pic of the truck with the pickup bed. This truck was for sale on the oldihc.org website in May or June of 2005, but I'm not sure what happened to it. The guy was in Canada and wanted $2500 for the truck and I believe it was missing the front clip.
The bed was only available on trucks with the single rear wheels which uses different hubs/drums than the dualies. It was also only available on the 130 inch wheelbase (not the 142 inch wheelbase). I'm told that the rear fenders are regular 1/2, 3/4 1 ton fenders, but there was a spacer between the fender and the pickup body. Hope this helps.
Your truck could have the SD220 or SD240 engine. It could have the Warner T9 (non-synchro) or T98 (synchro) 4 speed transmission. Axles are made by Eaton/IH. Rear is an RA-20 (IH designation) and according to the IH service manuals should have an early version of the detriot locker (although I've yet to confirm this). Front and rear axles use the same chunk/differential and are 6.16:1 ratio. The RA15 axles in the one ton trucks used the same chunk (without the locker) and were available with 4.88:1, 5.57:1 or 6.16:1 ratios, in case you ever wanted to change ratios. Transfer case is a Timken T32 which was also used in other trucks in WWII (Macks and possibly others). Our front axles also share alot of common parts with the IH M34 and M56 trucks from WWII. Warn designed hubs (built by IH) were available for our front axles, but are extremely rare (I have a set). Our trucks also share a lot of parts with the IH 150 series trucks (frames, rear springs, rear axle parts, etc.).
Let's talk again soon.
